just*abby  (0 ) View Listings | Report Feb-17-07 18:26 PST
Hi

Im after a bit of help and support for the UK boards.

Its hearly 2.30am here, and a massive global multi-hijack scam has been discovered.

Search for the words "Dont forget to include the item number in your message" in worldwide listings and you'll find the problem :|

Here's the UK thread:

http://forums.ebay.co.uk/thread.jspa?threadID=1200089939&start=0

We've been reporting since 9.30 this evening (some 5 hours) and there are still almost 400 active listings.

Unsure what to do now :|

Wow you guys, from the responses I've gotten when I asked about this, sad, and yes, for sure, "free labor force"!

How many hours have you honest well-meaning sellers spent researching and reporting these scams; you're of tremendous help to ebay! Their thanks to you is to pretty much ignore you! How much money have you saved ebay, how many man hours?

Like I mentioned above, tough love, helping ebay is enabling it to continue with the deception and cover-ups! It's time you guys went on strike, don't you think!

I've sold some books on ebay, and I wanted to sell some more books here, but, at this point I'm afraid to do business with ebay, bummer!!

No offense to anyone and just my honest opinion.

10 years on ebay this month. Never scammed, never been scammed. No major issues at all.

Thought you might like to know that;)

7+ years for me....no scams.

Well, I take that back. I've sold 15,000 items and have been "scammed" probably half a dozen times or so by buyers pulling fake paypal claims. But that's a different story altogether.

firemeg  (12 ) View Listings | Report Mar-12-07 18:14 PDT 1008 of 1042
Something else to think about:
By aiding eBay in their cover up of these scams by reporting the scams to eBay, you are saving some buyers for sure.

But, you're hurting the sellers in the process. All the V. et. al. episodes are hurting the reputation of the entire site. Has anyone taken a look at alexa lately? Today was up, but still at lows not seen in years. ebay also recently passed by microsoft in rank and blogger will pass ebay for good in weeks or less.

So you guys are worried at all that ebay's getting ready to crash?

Nope, not worried at all.....because it's not going to crash. There will be issues, and some changes (possibly major), but it's going to be around for a bit.

Over 7 years and never been scammed either but that changes my opinions not. I found this place only after having my auction images and descriptions repeatedly stolen and used by scammers to defraud others. I am no longer willing to present my expertise for use by scammers to harm my neighbors. Having found this board as you all have has enabled me to educate myself beyond the norm so little surprise that many of us can claim that we have not been personally harmed.

When virus's can be picked up by merely viewing auction pages the place is no longer safe and it's getting worse all the time IMO. Ebay has failed to stem this tide and I fear it's now too late for that to happen no matter what they do.

Well, Information is Power.

The issue is that average eBay user lacks it.

I can gather 1000 Hijacked sellers in a week - real time.

Hijacked seller lacks information: He/She thinks they are alone and somehow done something wrong by surrendering their eBay Identity to a Scammer. They are told that the site has no security breaches and that it must have been them who did something to have their identity jacked. Not something they may want to brag about and more over the seller feels powerless and insecure since they usually do not know how where and what happened. All they know for sure, their eBay identity has been jacked.

Buyer lacks information: he/she feels even worse, they actually lost money (Those who followed through with the deal, they were told they should have not done a deal outside of eBay and paid by insecure method like WU... However these Buyers are Newbie buyers so when they saw an eBay auction advertised FOR BUY IT NOW EMAIL ME HERE, they just followed through and did, then they received official looking email from """"eBay"""" telling them the seller is bonded and the seller has Super Feedback and that it is OK to pay by Western Union). The newcomer buyer to eBay is not going to examine email source headers and do forensics on the transaction, so he/she sends the money to the scammer and ultimately crashes into reality only seeking help afterward.

This has been the case for years. I tend to agree that reporting the hijacked sellers with tainted auctions is only band-aiding the tumor.

Perhaps a new discussion thread would be beneficial. Call it Hijacked Sellers Round Table. Instead of reporting the hijacked seller and his/her jacked auction, invite the hijacked seller to the round table discussion thread. (I am willing to keep the list updated for such purpose and believe me, for a past month these numbers you see today have been consistent) In a matter of a month we should have a few thousand participants - a COMMUNITY voice strong enough to be reckoned with.

I have never been scammed either except by a buyer once, but I am less sure about eBay's ability to survive this. I would not feel that way if I saw them being proactive....but first they have to admit the problem begins with eBay's security or lack of. If they do that and start working on the problems I think they can recover. There is little sign that they are willing to do that though.

My personal opinion..... they need to clean house and get some people in here to rebuild and fix the security issues from the inside. And then they need management that understands the venue eBay claims to be. The current batch of corporate hacks is out of touch with everyone and everything except the cash we have put in their pockets for them. It will be interesting to see who moves on down the road.

oh boy.

I just got off the phone with one of the users who had their information compromised on Thursday. [sigh]

She told me that ebay had NOT contacted her at all. eBay had NOT called her. eBay had NOT emailed her.

(you might remember the eweek article from yesterday where eBay spokesperson Catherine England said that eBay was contacting the members on the list.)

She also said that eBay had NOT locked down her account.

She was contacted by three people about the incident however. I left a message and she also talked to another eBay seller who was concerned and to the eweek article's author.

She said that she had no idea how the scammers got the info.

well, at every turn, it just looks like bad news for ebay to me, if ebay would have owned up to the issues, and been honest, and shown a bit of common courtesy and support to their customers, but they don't! Thanks everyone! I'm off to Germany to discuss the one who shall remain unnamed here!!

Forgive me for not reading all 26 pages of this thread. First, my thanks. I've been reporting a scam with hijacked listing for several days now to Safe Harbor. I'm happy to report that I am seeing auctions TKOed after I report them.

Second, I have a theory. I noticed a pattern. The hijacked listings often use the seller's legitimate shipping, payments, or category information (and often most erroneously). I notice that both the legitimate listings and the hijacked listings are usually completed so rapidly as to imply the use of a tool. I suggest that someone has imbedded a trapdoor in one of the auction listing tools to either steal ids and passwords or to post hijacked listings.

Your thoughts please?

firemeg  (12 ) View Listings | Report Mar-12-07 19:03 PDT 1017 of 1042
I called a couple more on the list. Both were contacted by eBay. The person who called them, Curt, didn't mention a thing about phishing to any of them.

Funny how eBay's blaming these people for falling for phishing scams, but doesn't say, "Oh, by the way, do you know anything about phishing or how to protect yourself?"

They also said that eBay sent an email to their email address ONLY (not to MyMessages) and they were a bit confused by that since they at least knew that authentic eBay emails come through both email and MyMessages.

firemeg  (12 ) View Listings | Report Mar-12-07 19:05 PDT 1018 of 1042
fdull- I bet if you had proof of that, eBay'd be willing to buy it from you :)

It has been discussed, but I have seen nothing anywhere else on the web about such a possibility or a method.

We are also well aware that ebay did not disclose the extent of what information had been compromised. Leaving the users without a clue as to what steps they needed to take to avoid the complete identity thefts that were surely going to take place considering how complete that information was.

If not for good neighbors such as you they would have been left hanging out to dry thanks to ebay and they could have helped. Telling someone their account might have been compromised and failing to mention it included information such as their SSN's? Shame on them!

If eBay wanted to be proactive, it would hire a bounty hunter to find the crazy Romanian, and/or publicly offer a substantial reward for his arrest and subsequent conviction. I don't know what the extradiction process is from Romania to the United States, but I would think the Romanian government could be persuaded to extradict this person to the United States.

There is no honor amongst thieves, and even the crazy Romanian's associates would turn him in for the right amount of money.

Conversely, eBay should hire the guy because he would probably do a better job fixing the security breaches.

The bottom line is that eBay doesn't care. If it did, it would hire the best IT security consultants that money can buy. If eBay wants to start somewhere, start with Frank Abagnale, Jr. - http://www.abagnale.com

Some of us have spent thousands of hours and reported hundreds of thousands of ATO listings. There is no way to tell how much money was saved for those that fell for the scam, as the "contact me" statements take them out of the ebay system. But there has been millions of dollars saved by getting listings with bids taken down before they closed.

STOP.....JUST STOP!
Let all the fraud consume and overtake.

We mask the fraud and assist eBay in their bottom line.

Quit, Step Back, see what happens if we stop trying to be the Good against the Evil.

Lets see what eBay will do about it.

We may be a drop in the bucket....but let eBay be responsible for the site it created.

Its hard to let it go....but eBay has DEEP DEEP pockets.

Time for them to step up to the plate!

I suspect that ebay is inactivating the user's ID immediately to stop more listings from being added to the system - which would explain the NARU. It can take a lot longer to get rid of the listings themselves. Some of the ATO accounts have thousands of bogus listings.

Yes, the scammers even modify store listings or add more to the store.

I don't think things have changed significantly in the last couple of months, except maybe getting slightly worse. The problem is that ebay is reacting to reports, rather than being proactive about finding and eliminating the fraudulent listings themselves.

There are relatively simple ways that ebay could minimize the ATOs and fraudulent listings. The methods have been mentioned many times in various threads on this group. So far, ebay had totally ignored the suggestions and is even going to make matters worse by hiding the IDs of ALL bidders, so shilling on all auctions will be hard to detect and report.

The way they are going, they might as well remove all the reporting links, as the links will be useless.

Tahiti - very nice B-) I bet that's not where you are either but I guess life's just one long holiday for you V.

Out of curiosity, how many hours a day do you actually 'work' on average.

I see people are shouting to stop reporting. Condemn me if you like but I stopped reporting months ago. Yes, reporting may save a few people from being scammed but it doesn't prevent the majority of the scams being carried out off eBay.

There's only one way to do that and only eBay can do it but they won't do it as long as unpaid fools like us keep reporting - well, I stopped reporting after the boycott last year, partly because I discovered that (even though the scams were split up between reporters) eBay couldn't cope with the numbers.

I still have screenshots of ended scams where I contacted the 'winning bidders' and told them what was going on.

All were ultimately grateful but far too many asked 'how do you know it's a scam' ... well, duh.

It's eBay's problem folks and all you are doing is shoring up the share price and helping to bury the facts.

Hard to accept though it may be, the long term interests are not served by reporting the scams to T&S - tell your local newspaper / TV news / email The Register / leave comments and details on financial blogs and eBay will soon have to do something about it.

What have they done so far?

Hired a new PR firm, that's what X-(

Out of curiosity, why are you toying with ebay?

You know once everyone is gone it will be desolate here.

Why don't you just flood ebay until it crashes & cause them to either shut it down or something?

Or is that beyond you're control?
